Crate Training Your Puppy

Puppy’s feel safe when they are provided with their own “Den” environment.

Crate training has many benefits such as:

    Reducing potty training time

Provides your puppy with its own “home” when it becomes tired, or anxious

Helps to teach your puppy better behavior

Provides you with peace of mind by not having to worry if your puppy is tearing up the house, eliminating itself , or developing other bad habits while you are gone

Crate training makes it easier to travel with your puppy

Familiarize your puppy with its crate as soon as possible. Put a few treats inside, and a small towel, or blanket with the door open to make your puppy want to go in on its own. This is to be a positive experience for your puppy, so never try to force it inside. When your puppy appears to be ready to nap, place it in the crate with a treat and close the door.

Always praise the puppy when he enters the crate. Leave the room, but be close enough to be able to hear the puppy. The puppy might begin to whine, but don’t let him out as this would be rewarding him for whining. If it continues, console the puppy, but don’t let it out. (never raise your voice or yell at the puppy) Try to ignore the puppy. When it stops whining, and settles down, open the door and praise your puppy for positive behavior.

Gradually increase the time your puppy remains in the crate, but don’t exceed the time when your puppy will need to relieve himself (less than 4 hours). If the puppy eliminates in the crate before this time, simply clean the crate, and shorten the length of time he is in the crate. (gradually increasing the time).

If you need to be gone for a long period of time, place the crate in a bathroom, or laundry room with the door securely open, and place newspapers outside of the crate, so he may eliminate on them, and not in his crate.

Dogs are social animals, placing the crate in the same room where the family gathers, help them to feel included. Never use the crate as a punishment device. The crate can be used to prevent many behavior problems in a positive way. Remember your dog wants to please you. Never feed your puppy in his crate, or before placing your puppy inside.

Crate training takes time, and patience during the early stages of your puppy’s life, but it also creates very positive results, and a great relationship between you and your pet.
